Self Conscious Over You…
You can thank our good friend Carl for ripping this tasty cut of The Outcasts performing their top tier track “Self Concious Over You.” Part of the same Belfast punk scene that gave us the genius that is The Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, Rudi etc, they can also be thanked, inadvertantly, for helping to introduce the cult of the shaven head to the United States, as it was them who first shaved a young Harley Flannigan’s head (as he was on tour in Ireland with his band the Stimulators), who in turned brought skinhead back to New York, and the rest is history…

Nothing new to report, just some quality byrd picts to tide ya over until the update on this weekend’s footie action is done… Though, personally, I’m in mourning over the poor Barça showing yesterday–how you gonna draw w/ Atletico Bilbao? 
So as we all know, the cult of the skinhead was partially birth’d by the co-opting of the mods by the middle class… as hard, sharp and clean living gave way to shaggy hair and paisley; the working class yobs of ‘69 laced up the boots on their feet, pulled their crombies tighter, and applied the clippers to help distinguish themselves from the more peacocky mods and more importantly from the filthy hippies. What wasn’t dropped, however, was the love of reggae, rocksteady, ska, and obscure American Soul… 
I imagine that 90% of the time, the English FA will be the topic of anything that anyone writes for Skinbyrd on the subject of soccer/association football (from here out to be referred to as fussball so as not to offend/annoy anyone). But not right now. This weekend gone by was the start of the African Cup of Nations, hosted this time around by Ghana, and the tournament will continue through February 10. There has been a lot of whining coming from England and France in particular, two nations whose domestic leagues have increasingly come to rely on African players at all positions. Why can’t Africa have their national tournament in the summer when the European leagues are off? I can’t think of a better excuse than this: there is no amount of air conditioning that would help people trying to play 90 minutes in the summertime in Africa. So here we go. 
First off many many apologies for taking a few days off this week–things have been a little hectic down at the rubber plant lately, but never fear, the runnin’ down the back streets continues!! Now, let’s say you’re a young fresh-cut; glimmering skull to match the high sheen of them boots on your feet.. and you see this lovely lass from across the chippy and you want nothing more than to have a war on her terraces…

Ok, no real trouble, not yet at least–though my own byrd stopped me from trying to take a picture of random byrd at the chippy the other night… happily, though, things seem to be picking up around here at skinbyrd.com. So, I just wanted to check in and spread the news of just a few of the things we have planned for you in the coming weeks….
