don’t you think its lovely? no?
i can see that any co-opting of a subculture by mainstream society is frustrating, however its always happened and i think beautiful things come because of it. you can’t tell me that you don’t just want to eat them up! cause i sure do.
btw-is that a t-shirt with suspenders printed on them? clever? or annoying?

The stuff on the runways never really translate to the stores, or rather to whos buying what. In the end if someone picks up a shirt, or boots or single pieces, maybe those will inspire them to seek out and embrace the genuine. Hopefully the soundtrack on the runways will be the same. As with fashion, they’ll be something different in the fall. Don’t forget the boom of flannel when Seattle and grundge exploded, the runways were full of it.

I go back and forth really.. and I remember Mr Marc Jacobs and his grunge show… I think its more random and jarring than anything else, much like the grunge thing was at the time… that and its weird to see David ‘GoldenBalls’ Beckham dressed like a skin on the cover of… shit what was that magazine..

[…] This Is England, fashionista publications and designers everywhere have hopped upon the bandwagon. Skin Byrd gives some great examples of runway fashions from the past year. In my opinion, pretty sad attempts […]

She looks cute, but not authentic. I have been noticing the fashion for a little bit among the byrds on my campus, it’s been sort of an easing into the look and the culture. I love it as a look on them. The guys up there look like some kinda bad adam ant contest rejects.
just for te record: I’ve been Oi for over 20 years.
I do take some offense to the fashionistas hijacking the look. I’ve always felt our scene was sort of the last rebellion. The only one that was not commercialized/homogenized/genericized for mass consumption since there is a bit of the old ultraviolence and fascist politics associated with our subculture.
I figure that even if the look is popular for a while, the real values of our subculture will not take on a mass scale in contemporary consumerism and we may wind up with some new Oi brothers and sisters. Although I do not know how real working class folks will afford this stuff;)
