Nothing Has Changed…

Its been a little while, but we’re back in action with the much loved and adored Skinbyrd.com mixtape! For this, the sixth manifestation of the series, we head off in a little more of a spirit of 77 meets power pop direction–the perfect soundtrack for your weekly scooter trek down to the shore, always on the outlook for teddy boys to get in a tangle or two with… Read more »

I Got Your Number…

Or at least I wish I did… maybe if I play this for you, you’ll give it to me?

(From the 1994 CD re-issue by Step-1 Music, written by Simon Edwards of Riot City Records, August, 1994)
Riotous Assembly was more of a necessity than an idea. During 1981 so many bands were springing up all over the UK, making demo tapes, doing gigs, and generally having a damned good rant at the world, that we (Riot City) were gently pursuaded into releasing a selection of these bands, together with a few more established Riot City bands. This is a New Age…

When I hear… the sound of concrete and steel… I sense a rythm, that science can’t feel… I feel the beat… of our hearts as one… I hold your colour, when my vision is gone… This power is something but the force is blind… Transmitted through a network, of your own kind… As minutes tick away… and days become years… I know this old feeling, it’s a substance in my tears… And the kids on the street, And the kids everywhere, And all I gotta say is the kids don’t care… Read more »

Even tough guys need someone, sometimes…

With Valentines day coming up an’ all, we figured we’d get a little sappy. Just look at these lovely byrds, out on the prowl for some working class yob to call their own, and then there’s that poor lost lad in the background… so lonely in his dreary world of working on the docks, living on chips and pints or marmite an’ toast–with nothing to look forward in life but the dream of another failed Liverpool run at the title… no one waiting at home, cooking up a proper toad in the hole, or bangers an mash… Well, Cock Sparrer feels the lads pain… Read more »

Songs About (Skinhead) Girls

Alright so what’s a bit of girl watching without an appropriate soundtrack. What we’ve got here is an overview of the songs about skinhead girls (in no particular order and this is a work in progress) :

“Skinhead Girl” - This one’s a gimme, I will admit. Pretty sure this one originated with Symarip, but I honestly do not know if they wrote it. The song has covered by about every band within a mile of the skinhead scene, including The Specials, The Oppressed, Patriot, Bad Manners, Murphy’s Law, Section 5 and Sheer Terror. (Young) Pioneers even ripped the (Oppressed’s version’s) instrumentation off for “Downtown Tragedy” on their Lookout LP. Whether this was intentional or the subconscious power of the song’s titular girls, who can say. Anyways for my money The Symarip and Oppressed versions are the essential two, because I just can’t feel that Two Tone revival ska crap and almost every other version just straight up sucks (though the (Y)P song is real ace, it’s not really relevant here).

LES ENFANTS DE L’ESPOIR

Oh gentle Skinbyrd… can it be true? Is the best way to your heart the sweet sweet street sounds of France? And could Warrior Kids be the ultimate inroad to an evening of cider drinking, window smashing and the discarding of Ben Shermans, steel toed boots and Fred Perry sweaters to the hard concrete of the back alleys? Pour la Gloire!

What sort of proper byrd doesn’t love herself some French Oi? How can one lose when you combine the grity, dirt-under-the-nails working class and shaved for battle sound of true Oi, with the romantic seductive sound of the language of love? No not Italian!! How many nights has this skinbyrd dreamed of a romantic dinner on the Left Bank, followed by drinking wine whilst strolling beneath the Eiffel Tower–cuddling up on a bench with her yob, with the sweet strains of the Warrior Kids blasting from their boombox?
